To practice as a veterinary professional in Alberta, you must be licensed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA). Veterinary professionals may own or work within a private practice, work within government or other agencies, or work within private industry. The routes to licensing vary for veterinarians and veterinary technologists.
For veterinarians, you have to first complete your registration with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s (CVMA) National Examining Board (NEB). The accreditation status of your school under the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education (COE), will determine the exams you must take to qualify to apply for a license with the ABVMA.
The licensing requirements for veterinary technologists differ from those of veterinarians. The accreditation status of your veterinary technology program under the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) or the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) determines the routes you will take to be licensed in Alberta.
